Kia clinches the winning series with back-to-back victories over Doosan.
On Tuesday, KIA won 6-3 against Doosan in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul, capitalizing on a split decision on the mound, including starter Lee Yi-ri, and focus in the middle innings. With its second straight win, KIA (25-27) cut the gap to 1.5 games over fifth-place Doosan (27-26-1).
KIA starter Lee Yi-ri was shaky in the third inning, allowing three runs, but settled down the rest of the way to earn his sixth win of the season, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings. The third pitcher, Park Jun-pyo, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, while Jang Hyun-sik earned the save in the ninth.
At the plate, leadoff hitter Ryu Ji-hyuk paced the offense with two hits and two runs scored, while Choi Hyung-woo had two hits and Socrates had one. Choi now has 1493 career RBIs, five shy of the KBO’s all-time leader, Lee Seung-yeop, who has 1498. Byun Woo-hyuk also had two hits and a walk.
On the other hand, Doosan starter Choi Seung-yong was not able to do his job, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Despite mobilizing five bullpen pitchers to keep KIA in the game, the offense couldn’t respond. On the day, Doosan struggled with just four hits. Kim Jae-ho led the way with two hits, but it didn’t translate into a win.
Coming off a win the day before, KIA scored early and often to take the lead. In the first inning, Ryu Ji-hyuk’s senses shone through. After leading off with a single up the middle, Ryu got a head start on the next batter, Park Chan-ho’s grounder to third base and made it to second. When third baseman Heo Kyung-min gave up second and threw to first, Ryu raced to third to put runners on first and third. Ryu Ji-hyuk’s clever play led to the team’s first run when Socrates grounded out to the shortstop.
In the bottom of the second, Lee Chang-jin drew a walk and Byun Woo-hyuk singled to right to put runners on second and third. Shin Beom-soo then hit a deep infield single to shortstop to bring in the third run. Doosan shortstop Kim Jae-ho tried his best to defend, but it wasn’t enough.
But Doosan wasn’t done. They took advantage of their opponent’s shaky start. Down 0-2 in the top of the third inning, Kim Jae-ho led off with a single to left field, followed by a walk to Kang Seung-ho. Jung Soo-bin followed with a bunt single between the pitcher and third baseman to load the bases.
Kim Dae-hyun grounded out to second base, but Lee Yoo-chan drew back-to-back walks to tie the game. Yang Seok-hwan then hit a huge sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-2.
However, KIA tied the game in the fourth inning when Byun Woo-hyuk singled up the middle after back-to-back singles by Kim Sun-bin and Lee Woo-sung. After Lee worked out of a jam in the fourth inning, KIA regained the lead with two runs in the fifth.
KIA opened the fifth with a leadoff single to left by Ryu Ji-hyuk, and one out later, Socrates singled to left and came home when Choi Hyung-woo singled to right. From there, Socrates stole third and came home on a throwing error to make it 5-3.
Kia followed Lee with Kim Yoo-shin and Park Joon-pyo to keep Doosan at bay, and then scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning. After a leadoff walk, Socrates singled and moved to second on a throwing error. This is where Choi Hyung-woo came to the rescue again. Choi hit a single to the side of the infield to bring in Socrates, and Doosan’s hopes were dashed. Kia closed out the game in the ninth inning with Jang Hyun-sik.
